Fell Running

Fell running is a deceptively simple occupation: you run to the top of a fell (hill or mountain) then you run down again. Or continue and run over several more fells. The terrain can include paths and tracks, or boulder fields and bogs where the correct footwear (feel not trail shoes) is essential.

The nearest “fell races” are at Box Hill in January and in Epping Forest in June. Mostly, however, you have to travel and Dulwich Runners have done races in South Wales and the north of England, often coinciding with holidays. Recently there has been considerable interest in the English Fell Running Championships – a series of six races spread over the season of varying distances. Details of the events for 2023 are provided below.

Feb 11 Long Mynd Valleys - AM 18.5 km/11.5 miles; 1372m/4501’. Church Stretton, Shropshire.

May 13 Fairfield Horseshoe - AM 14.5 km/9 miles; 914m/1999’. Rydal Hall, Cumbria.

June 3 Duddon Valley - AL 29 km/18 miles; 1830m/6004’. Newfield Inn, Seathwaite, Cumbria.

July 23 Chapelfell Top - AS 7 km/4.4 miles; 400m/1312’ - St. John’s Chapel, Weardale.

Aug 20 Sedbergh Hills - AL 22.5 km/14 miles; 1830m/6004’ - Sedbergh, Cumbria (British Counter)

Sept 23 John Hewitt Shelf Moor - AS 9.1 km/5.7 miles; 457m/1499’- Old Glossop, Derbyshire

The aim is to do 4 of these races in a year to score as an Individual (or a team). Last year we co-ordinated cars and had one overnight stay in the Lake district camping for the Langdale horseshoe. Please contact Mark Foster markafos@gmail.com if interested.
